“SUICIDE GIRLS”: THE NON-STEREOTYPED BEAUTY

Punk style, dreadlocks, many piercings, even more tattoos… these are the “Suicide Girls’” main characteristics.

“The main Suicide Girls’ goal is to represent themselves as they really are”

The Suicide Girls’ philosophy was born in 2001 in Portland, Oregon. The founders, Sean (Sean Suhl) e Missy Suicide (Selena Mooney), wanted to modify the concept of beauty that society had. They wanted to give to women a place where they could be free to express themselves. They desired to convey the message that a woman could be beautiful even if “different” from what world and the canons of society imposed. Sean and Missy Suicide opened a website in which girls were free to show their bodies without any shame: every body has its own characteristics and that is what makes a woman unique. Everybody has its own beauty and there are many ways

to express it. This virtual community of “Suicide Girls” is also a “place” where people can exchange views and where can read interviews of important representatives of pop and alternative culture.

The name of the movement derived from this principle. Even if at first glance the word “suicide” may suggest something obscure, actually it’s all the opposite. “Suicide” stands at the elimination of respectability and a kind of moralistic attitude that recognize women as sort of angels and people who just have to take care of family and home. Sean and Missy Suicide chose the name inspired by a novel by Chuck Palahniuk entitled “Survivor” in which the term “Suicide Girls” appears. The founders of the website borrowed it to describe girls who could’t be identify in a particular current of thought just because of the music they listen to.

The main Suicide Girls’ goal is to represent themselves as they really are, because to get tattoos or wear unconventional clothes doesn’t mean to be sloppy, but to be owner of themselves.
