The music project Smith Lyle and Moore was born from the great passion for music that connects the component of the band. The process of creation changes every time, it depends on the moment and on the message they want to communicate to the audience. Smith Lyle and Moore are about to release the new single called "Glimmer".
HOW WAS YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC BORN? AND WHAT IS THE STORY OF YOUR MUSIC PROJECT?
I was raised around music at a young age as my father was an established blues artist. I got into music a little later than might be expected, just through the virtue of being surrounded by friends who were getting into bands, and so that converged with a desire to express myself more musically.
Smith Lyle and Moore was born when Andrew (Smith) and I started working on our track “Fate” and came to realise that it should not be a one song thing, we had a great common ground musically that we were excited to build on.
We later brought Tyler Lyle into the project, whom Andrew had been working on a few songs with as there was an underlying theme with our musical endeavours that fit really perfectly with what we had already started.
WHEN YOU CREATE A NEW SONG, DO YOU TAKE INSPIRATION FROM SOME PARTICULAR SOURCE?
It changes all the time, as really anything can be inspiring. An interesting thing that can affect that is if the place that you are inspired is convenient to bringing the music into the world i.e. if you’re on a plane and you get a song idea in your head it can be difficult to reliably transcribe it.
With our track “Fate” the inspiration was a billboard that incepted a melody into my head, which I felt worthy of disembarking my bus a few stops early to sing into my phone, and from there I later married the vocal melody with the guitar chords.
I guess everyone has their processes.
MUSICALLY SPEAKING, DO YOU FOLLOW THE STYLE OR GENRE OF SOME ARTIST IN PARTICULAR?
I wouldn’t say so. I think the band write in a way that amalgamates all of our individual inspirations.
YOU ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE YOUR NEW TRACK “GLIMMER”, WHAT IS THE SONG ABOUT?
"Glimmer" I started writing years back on a beach in Santa Monica, staring into the ocean.
I took the idea to Andrew (Smith) and we started to realise the production of it over a week or two. It’s very aquatically inspired haha, the further stages of the song were brought to life at Andrews studio on Malibu beach.
IN YOUR OPINION NOWADAYS HOW CAN AN ARTIST STAND OUT FROM OTHER ARTISTS OR MUSICIANS?
It obviously differs from genre to genre, but I think we’re at an exciting time whereby you can actually make things happen for yourself by using your time wisely, the age of the Internet opened a lot of doors for people to be creative in how they present themselves. There are more opportunities now than there ever was, albeit with more musicians than there ever were haha.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE TO COLLABORATE WITH A BAND OR AN ARTIST, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
I’ve always loved Fleet Foxes, and the idea of working with a band like that has always been a nice idea.
IN YOUR OPINION WHAT DOES DARE MEAN IN MUSIC?
I think it’s a question people should ask themselves as an artist, it’s important to challenge yourself as much as you can. Be uncomfortable, it breeds growth and creativity.
